Beat Argentina, flattened Denmark (then took the foot off the gas after going three up in half an hour and led the eventual champions before going out by the odd goal.

Look at the other big teams that year - name another that played better. International pundits said our QF against Brazil should really have been the final.

It's because everything has been so sour from about 2006 onwards that people tend to forget that we weren't that bad at all.

2004 was the post 1990 peak though. Should have beaten France, coasted past Croatia and Switzerland and led the hosts for 75 minutes before going out on pens.
