I suppose he's trying to make a broader point about how charity decisions should be made

Do it for reasons that are not based on vaingloriousness and 'here are my criteria' which broadly everyone should have as their checklist.

But yes, as I caveated, personal choice is a glaring omission from what was otherwise a piece I liked (mainly because it avoided being sneery).
