Why should someone who once played for us be the right man?

Have said it before, but I still don't understand why we should be looking to ex-players when we pick Worthy's successor.

Suppose one argument might be that they might have more loyalty to the club, and so rebuff any offers than come on for them if they do well. But not sure that really makes very much difference.
