He either denied a goal (red card) or he didn't (yellow card)

and that question is one of fact. Given the location of the ball, it wasn't a question of whether he denied a clear goal scoring opportunity - it was clear that he didn't.

The ref got it wrong because it fell into the latter category and he thought it was in the former. After all, who would be stupid enough to dive and save a ball that was missing the goal?
