We could have signed an international striker with 80 goals in the last 4 seasons
But we did that in the summer. We could have bought a striker with nearly 70 goals in just over 100 games, but we also did that in the summer. We have another striker who is on the bench every single week with 87 goals in little over 200 games for his last club. Between them, they have over 200 goals in the last four years. To complete the set, we also have a further international striker who has scored goals in half a dozen of Europe's top divisions.
We have Pilkington, Redmond, Snodgrass, we also have Wes although that's not much use at the moment.
We also have players who are quite capable of moving up the pitch from midfield and having a shot. Leroy Fer scored 21 goals in the last two years.
Maybe "The Club" and moreso the Board feel that's quite enough attacking potential and even if they bought Lionel Messi it wouldn't make any difference.
We have good players and it is what they are being told to do that's the issue. RVW has been utterly "tucked up" to borrow a phrase someone else used somewhere else while Becchio has only been played 7 times.
I cannot see the point in spending more money on a striker if he isn't going to play. Hughton has his system and he isn't going to change it. It will very probably keep us up but then in the summer I hope the Board see him off sharpish and get a new man in.
But even when they do, what do we expect? Spending another ?50m to gain two or three places in the league? That isn't going to be very profitable is it? We're in the best sustained league position we've been in for 20 years and the best ever financial position the club has been in. No, I'm no more excited about it than you are but I don't want them to spend another shed load of money on players that could jeapordise all of that.
People put us second behind Barcelona in the business we did in the summer. I honestly believe we don't need anymore players right now but we first need a new manager if we're going to get any better.
