... I was at the Charlton game and barely noticed Francis. He contributed less against Man Utd than any other member of the team.

IMO, the big differences were made by:

Helveg (the defence looked far more organised when he was in it, and we looked far better at playing the ball out of defence intelligently rather than just trying to hoof it at Ashton or find Hucks to launch an attack quickly).

Ashton, who scored a couple of crucial winners in games where we hadn't played very well (and, if we're honest, the wins against Charlton, Newcastle and Birmingham weren't that impressive as performances)

Shackell, who played well and brought the best out of Fleming

Safri, who was a revelation in centre midfield.

And - when he could be bothered - Bentley (in fits and starts).

I really don't remember Francis contributing anything of note in those games.
