yes I know a bit about it. In fact I'm planning to do some travelling in the south after going to brandy's wedding in Jan. I'll probly go to Machu Picchu, and unless time constraints dictate otherwise I'll definitely try and do the Inca Trail up, rather than take the train and be surrounded by fecking cagool-wearing loudmouthed yanks and backpacking mongs who like to haggle over 10p with local vendors despite daddy having paid for their trip.

The walks up are supposed to be spectacular and has one particualr advantage, you get there first thing in the morning a good couple of hours before the first trains and droves of tourists, so you can have much more of it to yourself.

I'm far more interested in going to some of the small towns around Lake Titicaca though. Amazing scenery, friendly folk, archeological sites galore and great food

I'm not too familiar with msot of Southern Peru though - it's fairly ginormous after all - but I'd recommend going to Arequipa if possible. Amazing city, very well preserved and probably the best-looking central plaza in Latin America.

I have been to Ica. It's a bit crap really - fairly poor port city semi-destroyed by massive earthquake a about 3 years ago, Lima is very cool. best thing to do there is try out some of the FUCKING INCREDIBLE restaurants. There are some truly amazing and world class eateries, and they're cheap. Even the very best ones -2-3 on the list of the world's best- are pretty reasonably priced.
If you remind me of your email address I'll send you an interesting article about the restaurants that I had to translate yesterday. Honestly, you have to impress on her that she must try these places.

Never heard of Huacachina though.
