Simple maths. A two lane road is likely to be quicker than a one lane road, yes?

Because no matter how slowly the guy using the left hand lane is going, you can get by on his right.

Also a three lane road is likely to be quicker than a two lane road, because no matter how slowly the guy in the left lane, and no matter how slowly the guy overtaking in the middle lane, you can get by on the right.

A four lane road is quicker than a three lane road, (which is why the hilly bits of the M62 get a fourth lane to cope with slow lorries), and so on and so on.

By sitting in the middle lane with the left hand lane empty you're reducing the overtaking capacity of a three lane road down to that of a two lane road. Therefore the road's likelyhood of being quick is reduced.

There you go, proved, by maths.
