It seemed to be, back in the 70s/80s, the mark of a "serious" band when they brought out

... the live album, usually double, bare minimum with a gatefold sleeve. It's not really part of the punk/dance heritage, is it? Although those genres have some of the best live acts.

Springsteen Live '75 is a good example. Triple box set before he'd even really done anything major.

It's not often nowadays you get live albums by non-rock bands - Live Roseland NYC by Portishead for example.
