I remember Man City paying at least half of Adebayor's wages last year at Tottenham, meaning he could play and strengthen Spurs against what they saw as their main rivals (Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal) but couldn't play (and thus weaken Spurs) against Man City.
So in this case you are actually giving yourself an unfair advantage over your rivals (you play a strengthened team while you get to play a weaker one)
