the initial verdict was correct to the letter of the law AND military Rules of Engagement that Lee (and us all) had signed upto.

What seemed unfair were the local environment/circumstances the lads were working under and had become use to, ie, plenty of IRA shootings, bombings.... And so it was argued that Lee made the best decision he could at the time as he thought the car driving through the check point was an imminent danger to life. Which is wasnt. Eventually the mitigating circumstances worked in his favour. The initial conviction probaly saved another half dozen lives, as suddenly local scallies were weary of TWOCing and driving through armed checkpoints, AND soldiers manning checkpoints would then be more careful if deciding to open fire.
