I don't understand why it has become so vital for the country to win more medals in future

events, and why so much money is invested in it.

Does it improve the economy in anyway other than providng big multinational corporations with celebrity sandwich boards to peddle their merchandise?

I tend to go along with the thinking that sport should be encouraged for everyone at all levels for the purpose of getting fitter and healthier. Although I do also see the benefit in using a certain amount of competitiveness to encourage young people to strive for their maximum potential - but this shouldn't just be restricted to sport.
