I was on holiday last week and had to listen to a lot of radio 5. Which was fine for the most part but there was so much discussion as to how to keep on winning, and that anyone could do it if we could only start them young enough. Suggestions that schools monitor all pupils and select them for elite training reminded me of the Soviet systems of the 80s. I don't recall anyone seriously mentioning the possibility that you might not be good at sports or enjoy the competitive element - it was mainly suggested that if you aren't good at it you try others until you are. What no-one mentioned was doing it for fun; it was all about winning.
