You're right, the hype regarding Cav was ridiculous but if you

read real experts rather than the BBC's assortment of cycling Johnny-come-lately's then you would know it was never nailed on. Tricky outlined it well earlier. With just five riders and one of those being saved we technically had four men attempting to control a race of over a 100 racers. This they may well have achieved if the race was 150K or at a push 200K but never at 250K without at least one other team wanting to get their man into the sprint too. Unfortunately the only team who would help were Germany but they just haven't got riders of the ability to keep the speed up to make the catch. As Cav said at the end it's baffling to think that the only ambition of the 70 strong peloton was to simply sit in the bunch and ride it out. Cav's not unbeatable in a sprint and therefore the teams without riders in the front group should've helped with the chase if not what's the point of being there.
