Holt's choice is truly baffling to me

(This has almost certainly already been said, but I'm going to repeat it anyway.)

Holt was idolised here in a way that I've never seen any other Norwich player while I've been around. His reputation at the club was secured beyond doubt - if he had never scored another goal for us he would have still held legend status. And rightly so, for he's achieved great feats at the club. And now he's thrown every ounce of that goodwill away (which, frankly, is impressive in itself) in search of a pay rise. I know that's the nature of modern day football (coordinated by mercenary stone-hearted shyster agents), and I know he may be looking for a big payday before he finishes as he didn't earn so much early in his career. But still, to my mind you couldn't have put a price on his reputation and status here, which he'll never have anywhere else, and he'll never get back here. Surely that's what want most when you become a footballer? Like Iwan and Hucks, or even to a lesser extent players like McVeigh, he would have had held that status for life. And this has been rejected in favour of an extra 20% and another year on his contract? It's nonsensical to me, but I am an idealist, and realise I'm probably just being naive.

The saddest thing for me is that it will forever tarnish these last three amazing seasons. Now when I look back, I'm not going remember Holty as an inspiring club captain, but as the player who forsook it all for money. Lambert was always going to leave (albeit one would have hoped under less of a cloud), but Holty was supposed to be our memento, the golden memory. For me, that is over.
