I believe as part of the charter they're not allowed to do that...
...they take some advertising for BBC World broadcasts outside of the UK, but they're not allowed, as it currently stands, to become a fully commercial outfit...I don't want that anyway...
However the BBC cannot compete with Sky/Sky Sports, no one can, their budget is greater than all the terrestrial stations combined and growing all the time...
Which is why a pair of foreigners complaining about a BBC monopoly is total bollocks as the playing field is now firmly tilted towards News Corp in terms of finance, government and therefore ideologically too...
