I'm confused - you're using the Toshiba one now, or Mrs Git's?
Either way, my boss' Acer had a very similar problem - we thought it was motherboard or keyboard driver related, or possibly either of those were faulty - tried drivers, didn't work.
So I called Acer - there was a way of restoring it all to factory settings, so it was as though we'd just bought it.
And that sorted it all out (although he had to back up all data first, obviously)
