I went to a WW1 site once

as a moody, cynical 15 year old. Walked in one of the few remaing trenches, and then across the pot-holed strewn battlefield. Then we visited one of the many Immense Graveyards. I almost cried. And I'll never forget it.

I think you do have to keep reminders of these things.
