What's important to remember though is this,

The Richter scale is a measurement for damage and the severity of a quake cannot really be assessed by using it alone. It's the one that everyone jumps on because it's pretty simple to understand and it makes for good headlines. That's not to say this wasn't a big one, I've just been reading over some of the wave stats and they are powerful but not massively different to many of the quakes that Japan suffers every year. Another thing to note is that at least Japan is one of the most prepared and best placed to deal with an 'event' like that.
