for me he is vital to both Barca and Spain as he allows the others to express themselves freely. He influences matches by his incredible positional discipline which means when Barca play high up the pitch he is often just in the right place at the right time to regain possession before a counter-attack can happen. I've seen Barca games when he has been missing and they have been a lot more open on the counter. Really not sure how he would perform in a lesser side as his key attributes lend themselves to Barcelona, it's a tough one. He is really highly rated by 2 world class managers than work with him day in, day out though.
