OK, I wrote this in early 1999. I was unemployed at the time and it had become

obvious that New Labour wasn't going to be what I'd hoped it would. I was writing a bunch of songs as a final gesture before hanging up my bat and becoming human, and the whole collection is really quite bitter, looking back on it now. I was listening to it in the car the other day, and wondered if people who are unemployed today feel the same way as I did then....... ok here goes:

Shuffling through this shambling nation
I'm signed up for the duration
No respite just resignation
Desperation rife
Cruising through the job ads section
All dejection, no connections
Impostor selection last election
never thought I'd back an oligarch in my life

(kids voices: We'll be who we choose to be
Tell us who to choose to be)

Welfare policies neglective
Everything in ill perspective
No hope, no aims, it's ineffective
relegate the plan
Only some can beat inflation
Smile and nod at rich relations
Honesty is no temptation
Cheat whenever you can

(kids voices: we'll do as is right to do
tell us what we ought to do)

Small kids go through education
High school, college, qualifications
Promise flowers, then deflation
Money rules the day
Gleeful in their new perfection
No work, alas, in that direction
Walls are stained with disaffection
While away dismay

(Pistols reference):We won't be told a-what we want
and a-we won't be told a-what we need
There's no future, no future, no future for me

Ruling powers so mendacious
Walk by with expressions gracious
In their self-protection rapacious
be honest, you pigs
And think about your kids

(kids voices: we'll say as we choose to say
tell us what we ought to say)

Kids be angry always, never patient
Dangerous to be complacent
Only invites violation
This forever true
Robbed and damaged by committee
in the country, in the city
You're Lydon, you're John Simon Richie
What d'you think you should do?

(Pistols reference:)when there's no future, how can there be sin?
we're the flowers in your dustbin
we're the poison in your human machine
You're the future, our future

2010 labourforce
are we helpless? yes of course
sold downstream by circumstance
waifs and slaves without a chance

2010 labourforce
are we shattered? yes of course
national minimum, working nights
part-time only, no union rights

2010 labourforce
there's no pity, no remorse
Sony, reebok keep us quiet
banks and business steal our lives

2010 labourforce
our ship's not coming since they sold the ports
all are equal, and all depend
game rules by those who win in the end.

Go on then, rip the piss.
