that whole argument for no gun control is totally anachronistic though

and is taken out of the context when it was actually important. Over 200 years have passed since the US constitution was drawn up and that amendment was added.
The fact is that armed citizens wouldn't stop a corrupt government from destroying them if need be (eg branch davidians and other cases), and if push came to shove people would find ways of arming. As Ralf pointed out, most nations have managed to protect their political status quos without everyone being armed
