oh absolutely, trade alliances are often what makes the difference
however, (and this comes from Charlie Wegelius and why he'll never be picked for the UK team ever again) the national team does (often) come first, but only if the national team leader has a cat in hell's chance of actually winning. Roger Hammond didn't, Mark Cavendish might.
also a world champion would be good for all British cyclists, even on top of the massive strides British cyclists have made in the last decade (less than that on the road).
