I'd disagree with that. Even if you strip out all the religious elements, it can still

create a community, and a support network of friends for people.
Can be especially valauble to the elderly who may have outlived other relatives, or be separated from their own offspring as they've moved away etc.

As with all aspects though, that can go too far as well.
