Techy help please

my in laws Norton gubbins has just expired and they want ?60 for renewal - she can't afford that - is there a good free download she can get that will give her comp adequate protection - she doesn't spend much time on line but now she is on her own she will have to occassionally bank/shop. AVG springs to mind but looking at the site it doesn't look as simple as just downloading without signing up for something. could someone please point me in right direction - THANK YOU in advance
