Got an o2 one

They work by finding the connections in range and grabbing a slight bit off each

So if both your next door neighbours have good broadband, you'll get good range

If you live near a hotel or a net cafe, or live in a city, you'll hit hotspots which make the net free, but will not allow you to download even though it's free

There in, lies varying speeds it loads up a web page

If there's only one net connection around you for it to connect to, it will grab the minimum, and you'll get a page loading up at 1-7k a second (say a page needs 100k minimum to load up)

Mainly, from my experience, they're good, work well with connections around them, work better after about 4pm because people are generally going onlined

Pretty naff during the day, unless you're near hotspots of public interest (travelodges, cafes, anything with a netword etc etc)
