they got more than any other individual party, but that isn't sufficient. No-one is suggesting Labour alone beat them.

However if Labour and the LibDems formed a coalition, surely it is clear that together they have beaten the Tories - they certainly have a superior mandate than the Tories (more seats and far more votes). In fact, it would almsot certainly in terms of share of the vote have a bigger mandate than any government in my lifetime

For what it is worth, I think it is a disgrace that as a supposed democracy we do not have PR so that every vote counts and we get a proper representative government (no-one even bothered to campaign in my constituency since it was seen as a foregone conclusion so they all knew who I voted for would make no difference).
