It was a long time ago (1994 I think).
We were camping as we weren't long out of university then. So I don't really have any tips, though what I do remember is that the scenery was beautiful. We had driven through Switzerland to get there and deliberately gone over as many mountain passes as were practical trying to see glaciers etc. Little villages around the lake were nice for a stroll in the evenings, but then so is a lot of Italy.
Can't be more helpful I'm afraid.
