We didn't earn the right to be in the Championship this year so we're in League 1. The squad playing consistently at a level above most of our peers in League 1 will (hopefully) earn us the right to be there next year. I think a lot of the football league from about the lower end of the playoffs down is still a sort of meritocracy. Good players and good management can get you to the top of the football league and above (see Burnley last year) but it just can't keep you there... because the Prem is not a meritocracy really is it?
