Me, personally, and probably for selfish reasons, I don't want us to have a megarich backer.

I love this club. I have done since about 1970. Or 71, I forget which. I can't count the number of new signings who've excited me: as a teenager I hitch hiked across the country just to see Muzinic in pre-season friendlies.

Anyone of a similar age to me will know everything I could type here in a dozen paragraphs so I'll spare you details - but the club I know, understand and love, doesn't have much spare cash, doesn't spend pots of cash bringing in named stars etc.

I understand that we wouldn't be looking at Abramovitch-sized infusions of cash, but when I look at the like of Sunderland and Wiggin spending over the odds for the dubious pleasure of trying to stop in the Prem, well, o f**k it, you know what I'm saying.

My club signs Holts and Martins with the occasional Huckerby and Ashton. When we sign a current French international or touted Spanish U-21, I won't know what to do with myself. Yes I'd be delighted to win things, and be further up the league, but it wouldn't feel right.

I'd have to support the reserves.

(sidles away, pretends to see someone in the distance, and scurries off and out)
