I'm always quite interested in this

taking it away from our own sweet environment, everyone seems to assume that Rafa won't leave Liverpool because they'll need to pay off five years. But surely there's multiple elements in this. So you have a contract for five yeras, at the end of which the situation is reviewed. But if you breach the terms of that contract, eg by being rubbish, then there is a different settlement amount. Doesn't the length of contract relate to length of tenure not necessarily settlement fee? I don't know this, but I'm sure that there's more flexibility than the end-date of the contract.

So when we have a 'by mutual consent' it's presumably some sum that's an acceptable midway between what they'd get if they sat on their arses until retirement (I offer you Jamie Cureton) and the value to them of being free to earn cash elsewhere.
