I'd defend his right to defend his family in the home all day long, within reason.
Once they've left the property there is no risk of immediate harm, that's the key point of the law that allows people to defend themselves.
Its then purely a criminal matter and is the responsibility of the police.
In this case how far is it acceptable to chase someone? 100 yers, 200, a mile? 5 miles?
Also for how long? If he saw them the next day, or the week after would it still be acceptable?
Too much grey area, its fine in your home, once they leave its down to the police, that's why we have a justice system.
In this case a much much more sensible 'weapon' to chase them with would have been a mobile phone, calling the old bill to tell them exactly where to go.
That way the burglars get nicked and he doesn't.
