Certainly wasn't guaranteed to - but on the basis that every appointment is a gamble to some extent, it helps if you reduce your odds by not appointing someone whose only previous managerial experience involved London Grasshoppers U12s, or relegating various clubs, or none at all.

Incidentally, do I think Lambert is the best thing since sliced bread? I love how he's done, but not necessarily. The key for me is that the squad we'd assembled would be bound to do well if managed by someone competent. PL's certainly that, and then some; but it takes us back yet again to confirming Gunn in the job before new people were brought on to the board. Which remains ridiculous, and in terms of the points lost under him and Butterworth, could still end up costing us everything.
