FAO DIYers, sparkies etc

Overhead light not working, sometimes crackling at the switch: I've replaced bulb, then bulb holder, then the hanging wire to no effect. Is there any point replacing the rose as well, d'you reckon, or is it more likley that the prob lies with the wiring *to* the rose, in which case I either scramble around in the loft or 'phone a sparkie?

Basically, can anything go wrong with the rose? There doesn't look to be much in there that could fail, really.
