compooter techie advice required

I'm about to purchase some extra RAM for my notebook. The PC has two slots for this, one of which is already populated with a card.

Someone told me that I should ensure that both slots should have the same size of memory card, so for example, if it has only 512mb of RAM and I want to upgrade to 4MB, then I need to replace the 512MB card with a 1GB card.

Is this necessary and what are the possible problems if one has two cards of different sizes?
