I agree, a coup indeed.

I still don't agree that most would have been happy, mainly for the reasons you give above.

Doesn't blow he own trumpet, isn't a name.
Therefore most (like me) will be unaware of his record, won't bother looking into it (i like to think i would have) and snap to a judgement.
These days those judgements stick (just look at what happens on the net sites) and you;d have sections expecting him to fail.

When that happens every poor decision, bad game, even misplaced pass is jumped on as proof of their wisdom.
This goes on and on untill the prophecy fulfills itself as the backing isn't there in the stands, week in week out, that is so crucial to success.
