well...

there are situations in which the constraints set by the grammar of English leave things balanced in a state where nothing is fully satisfactory ? there is no unimpeachable solution ? so you just have to chance it, and go with one decision rather than another on a basis of? well, taste and educated discernment.

alternatively, rewrite the sentence to avoid the problem.
