I think he's taken the opportunity to show his art.

But he's not selling out to be more TV friendly, in some ways it might show a bit of fear that, even if he tried his very best, he wouldn't get a second series anyway so he'll just do some anti/meta comedy that will fry the minds of people at home who don't get it.
