they're ploughing money into the web, which is directly taking money away from the company because why buy the paper when it's free online? There's no longer term strategy about how to make money from the web - and in diluting the quality of the paid-for product, they are effectively paying money to hasten their own demise.
Utter madness, but then the decisions were taken by marketing men and not journalists, so what do you expect?
