Before Sky came along and started chucking money at the Prem (and those at the top of the Prem) many clubs could at least - with a bit of clever trading in the transfer market*, bringing through the odd youngster, an intelligent manager and a bit of luck - actually challenge for the title.
Moreover many clubs are spending vast quantities of cash in the hope that they'll cash in on the CL (or World League?) bonanza eventually. Like the credit derivatives market similarly trading in debt this is unsustainable and will collapse sooner rather than later.
The point is that the game itself is f**ked; not just our club.
* - regarding this, I think the transfer windows also benefits the big clubs as they can afford the big squads necessary to get them between windows. It also tends to push up prices.
