I had exactly the same problem a few weeks ago

Unfortunately Cookpassbabtridge's remedy is the only one that worked for me, tried all sorts before eventually having to re-install, and even then the nasty malware monster tried all it could to stop that happening.

I have now removed all but the faintest traces of Internet Explorer from my laptop and even managed to teach my missus how to use Firefox.
