I don't think I've made my points very well

all I'm really trying to say is that these people who are doing good things are doing so because they are good people, not because they are religious.

I suppose that's the same argument that bad people are doing bad things because they are bad people and not because they are religious. But I guess all the while the stated reason for doing them is religious (ie. extremist muslims wanting to kill non believers) then religion will, rightly or wrongly, take the blame.

It's a bigger question and issue than I can answer or discuss properly.
