Well, of course, it's all financial

The SPL doesn't get anywhere near the cash of the PL so, naturally, the biggest (ie. richest) clubs want a slice of that pie for much the same reasons that the biggest (ie. richest) clubs in England want a European league (or even that mad idea of playing a few games in the Far East).

I don't think either are necessarily non-starters - when money is behind the idea then eventually they'll find a way.
