to me what's happening now is a 'lifestyle' business. Everything is manageable, comfortable and ticking along ok (I'm not talking about the unpredictability of results). Now as an owner you can decide that a lifestyle business is what you want and continue - perhaps with a few good years of growth, or you can decide that you want to kickstart the growth, take on a new approach - in which case you probably have to take external investment, and perhaps lose out on some of the comfort and control.
Google didn't need to float on the stock market to continue as a fairly decent search engine, but they did to fund everything else they wanted to achieve.
