Right-ho. Upgrade your router, wi-fi client or both

This often happens if you have a lot of metal in your house, funnily enough. Luckily mine is all wooden floorboards / beams and actually but even in my house at first I could only get a signal if I was on the ground floor (a big single room where the router is positioned), in my "study" on the first floor which is right about the router, next to the stairs and with no door separating it, and an incredibly weak signal if I were to be on the 2nd floor hovering right over the stairs.

Upgrading the router was too painful (would have to reinstall it all) so I bought a more powerful client (as in USB stick / PCMCIA card / PCI card). Straight away I had great reception all over the house, and even on the roof terrace which is outside (obviously) on the 2nd floor.
