The path down to the centre is to the left of the map. Can't remember what it's called; but we got it from the Lonely Planet guide to Florence, etc.

Don't let it put you off; but Florence (& other Italian towns cities for that matter) are terribly spoilt by traffic and the best food, without a shadow of a doubt, is found outside the cities.
