go to a "proper" shop to get your shoes, and make sure they do a gait test on you to see what sort of shoe you need - that might save you any amount of pain through the knees and ankles.
And if you run outdoors on roads rather than on a treadmill, invest in some shock-absorbing insoles, they'll help too.
