... my parents are both white and middle-class, the only newspaper we ever got was The Daily Mail, and they always voted Tory, even when everyone else had stopped.

But conservatism - especially social conservatism - just doesn't make sense to me at all. I can understand economic conservatism, although I'm not mad keen on it - "I've got money and I want to keep it" (I've never had any money, by the way!) - but the kind of xenophobia and homophobia you find in certain conservative quarters just baffles me!
