can't be arsed to get a book out to check who invented it etc. But basically it's a way of transliterating Chinese symbols into English. But it's far from phonetic, which catches you out at first. Once you've learned it it's fine. I have lived in China for a couple of years now and it's easy to figure out.
Main exceptions are Q for 'ch', X for 'sh' Zh for 'j' and some more that I can't be arsed to remember.
look up 'pinyin' on google for more info.
