Went to see the Terracotta Army exhibition, and was struck by the fact that the name of one of the old provinces was given as "Qin (pronounced 'chin')".
What I don't understand is, when transliterating the Chinese into English characters, why not write "chin" in the first place? What is the point of writing it in a way that makes sense to no-one?
